Object of the Game
In President, the goal is to be the first player to either reach a pre-defined score (usually around eleven points) or win a set number of rounds. Players compete to get rid of their cards while strategically playing combinations of the same rank to outwit their opponents. The game’s hierarchy of titles adds a layer of excitement, making every deal significant and ensuring that even those with fewer cards still have a chance to turn the tables.
Setting Up the Game
To get started, gather your friends and a standard deck of playing cards. Ensure that all cards, including both jokers, are shuffled thoroughly. The game accommodates 4 to 7 players, making it perfect for small gatherings or larger parties. Once the deck is ready, proceed to deal out the entire deck of cards evenly among the players.
Playing the Game
Here’s a step-by-step guide to playing Presidents:
- The player holding the 2 of clubs begins the first round by playing a combination of one, two, three, or four cards of the same rank. This combination doesn’t have to include the 2 of clubs – it’s just the starting point.
- Play then proceeds clockwise, and the next player must play the same number of cards as the previous player, with the cards being of the same rank or higher. For instance, if the first player plays two 10s, the next player can play two 10s, Jacks, Queens, Kings, or Aces. The cycle continues until all other players pass.
- The player who played the last set of cards takes the lead for the next round. Rounds continue until all but one player has emptied their hand.
- After each round, points are allocated based on the order in which players finished. The player who finishes first becomes the President for the next round and scores two points, while the second to finish becomes the Vice President and scores one point. The second-to-last is designated the Vice Bum, and the last remaining player is the Bum.
- The Bum shuffles and deals the cards for the next round. Before the new round begins, the Bum exchanges two of their highest cards with two of the President’s cards, and the Vice Bum swaps their highest card with one of the Vice President’s cards. This adds an intriguing twist to the game, allowing for shifting fortunes.
- Play continues as rounds progress, and the game ends when a player reaches the pre-defined score or after a set number of rounds. The player who emerges as the President in the final round is declared the overall winner.
