How to Play Telepathy: A Party Game About Guessing Your Partner’s Words

Telepathy is a lively party game where players work in pairs. They come up with a list of six words and create six more related words secretly. One player tries to guess the related words while the other provides no clues. After six rounds, the pair with the most points wins.

Number of players: 4 – 20

Playing time: 45 minutes

Materials needed:

  • Pencils and paper for each player

Instructions:

  1. Split the players into pairs. If there is an odd number of players, one team will have three people.
  2. The game consists of several rounds, with six rounds being a good number to start with.
  3. In each round, one player from each pair (Player A) will gather together privately. They will come up with a list of six words, making sure the other players can’t hear. These words can be anything – people, places, things. Use your imagination! Try to choose words that all players will understand and have heard of. Player As write down these words on their sheet of paper.
  4. Individually and on a separate piece of paper, all Player As come up with six more words, each corresponding to one of the original six words. There should be a connection between each set of words. For example, if one of the original six words was ‘Paris,’ a good corresponding word may be ‘France.’
  5. Pairs get back together. Player Bs are shown the list of the original six words, while Player As hide their list of connecting words. Start a timer.
  6. All Player Bs try to guess the six corresponding words based on the list they can see. Player As should not provide any visual or verbal clues. They can only say when one of the corresponding words has been guessed.
  7. The round ends when one pair successfully guesses all six corresponding words or when three minutes have passed. Each pair earns one point for each corresponding word they guessed correctly.
  8. Switch roles for the next round. Player As become Player Bs and vice versa.
  9. Play six rounds in total.
  10. The pair with the highest score after six rounds is the winner.

Variations:

  • Instead of deciding the original list of six words at the start of each round, you can prepare lists of words beforehand.
  • To add more variety, make players switch partners each round.
