Objective of the game
Guess the real definition of a word while convincing others that your made-up definition is correct.
Setting up the game
Decide who will be the first player to select the word (become the “dictioner”).
Playing the game
-
The dictioner selects an obscure word from the dictionary and reads it out.
-
All players (except the dictioner) write their own made-up definition for the word on a piece of paper.
-
The dictioner writes the real definition in their own words on a separate piece of paper.
-
The dictioner collects all the definitions, including the correct one, without revealing who wrote each definition. If any player’s definition matches or closely resembles the real definition, it is removed from the game without being read.
-
Going clockwise from the dictioner, each player (except the dictioner) chooses the definition they believe is correct by writing their name next to it.
-
Once all players have made their choice, the dictioner reveals the correct definition.
-
Each player (except the dictioner) receives one point for every player who chose their definition. Each player receives one point if they guessed the correct definition. Each player (except the dictioner) receives two points if their definition matches or closely resembles the real definition. The dictioner receives two points if none of the other players chose the correct definition.
-
The game continues for a predetermined number of rounds, with each player taking turns as the dictioner.
Winning the game
At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins.
